La Ronde a amusement park in Montreal, Quebec, Canada has announced a brand new virtual reality (VR) rollercoaster experience created in partnership with Samsung Gear VR and Oculus VR. Using the parks pre-existing Goliath rollercoaster, visitors will now have the option to wear a Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) before boarding the ride, viewing a futuristic virtual world while enjoying the thrill of a rollercoaster.

The New Revolution VR Coaster is themed on a sci-fi battle between earth and an alien invasion. Riders find themselves as co-pilots in a fighter jet about to go into combat. As the ride begins its ascent, visitors will see their aircraft towed into position where the engines will start, launching them though the roof of a skyscraper. As the plane leaves the roof that’s when the first drop on the rollercoaster happens. After which riders will fly through the city towards the alien mothership, dodging drones on route to destroy it.

“The remarkable technology is a definite game-changer for theme park rides and represents everything La Ronde stands for,” said Phil Liggett, President of La Ronde in a statement. “We are excited and proud to offer our guests something they have never encountered before–their first-ever virtual experience on a roller coaster. It is going to blow their minds!”

La Ronde is part of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation which runs 18 parks across the US, Mexico and Canada. VRFocus will continue its coverage of VR use in theme parks, reporting back with the latest announcements.
